Join us to celebrate the first edition of our newly founded yearly Autumn Jazz Festival, and the more-vibrant-than-ever Copenhagen jazz scene in general, as we elaborate on the news story that appeared on American prime-time television on PBS NewsHour entitled “Why Copenhagen is becoming the jazz capital of the world.” This talk precedes the festival's first concert (A Ray Charles Celebration) and has free admission. Everyone is welcome but advance reservation is required.
Speakers:
Kjeld Frandsen: Journalist at Berlingske and the oldest, most prolific and most experienced among Denmark’s currently active jazz writers and critics.
Benedikt Wechsler: Switzerland’s ambassador to Denmark, appearing on behalf of the Montreux Jazz Festival - one of the oldest and most prominent jazz festivals in the world.
Victor Jones: American expat and former drummer for Stan Getz, Michel Petrucciani, Little Jimmy Scott and others.
Niels Lan Doky (moderator): Jazz pianist with longstanding international career, lived abroad 1981-2013 (32 years)

Topics TBC: A brief overview of Copenhagen’s unique jazz history and the significant migration of African-American jazz expats to Denmark in the 1960s and 1970s. The role of jazz in Denmark’s cultural life, past and present. What are some of the reasons why Copenhagen is on its way to becoming a new global epicenter for jazz? How could or should Copenhagen exploit and strengthen this momentum? What are some of the challenges and obstacles ahead? The Montreux Jazz Festival as a comparative case study. Q&A from the audience.
