Joined by Petra Barran, British entrepreneur and founder of KERB. If there’s someone who knows how to start a food business it’s Petra! Not only has Petra done it herself starting by selling chocolatey goods out of an ice cream van, she has since backed hundreds of others on their journey to starting their own businesses.
Petra began in the mobile food business in 2005 when she hit the streets with Choc Star, Britain’s first dedicated chocolate van. Out on the road she discovered a go-getting community of fellow traders and saw the potential of their combined power. In 2009 she co-founded eat.st, a street food collective with the aim of ‘driving British street food forward’ and then went solo to launch KERB in 2012. An MSc in Urban Studies from UCL has helped to inform and develop KERB’s ethos of good people + great food + public spaces = what a city is made for.
Petra was named 'One of the Ten People Who Changed the World' by the Independent in 2011, in 2014 The Sunday Times wrote ‘Barran has changed the face of British cuisine’, in 2016 she was named in Big Hospitality’s Power List 100 No.6 of the ‘disruptors’ and in 2018 TimeOut listed her as one of 50 Great Londoners making the city ‘a fantastic place to go out in right now’.
After a few years living in New Orleans, hunting for treasure, Petra is back in London and working on KERB’s new online food business course, KERB Classroom and Seven Dials Market’s and KERB's return to public life! This is a talk you will not like to miss! Watch Petra's TED Talk here
Countertalk founder Ravneet Gill will be throwing out those motivational gems and talking from experience. Bringing an insight from a few different angles, Ravneet founded Countertalk - an organisation aimed at improving the working conditions in the hospitality industry in 2018. She has been on the front end of starting a food business by creating a bakery pop up with queues around the corner in 2019. Ravneet knows how to build a cult following which led to the snowballing of 'puff the bakery' on socials taking the account from 0 to 25k in less than 9 months and subsequently creating and selling an online baking school during lockdown with over 6k subscribers.
