About: The studio album “Night Train” by the Oscar Peterson Trio was released in 1963 and featured pianist Oscar Peterson in his classic trio with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. It is arguably the most successful, popular and acclaimed album of Peterson’s life and career. The recording sessions took place December 15 & 16, 1962 in Los Angeles under Norman Granz’ supervision. The Penguin Guide to Jazz describes it as "one of the best LPs of the period.” The album was named as the jury winner of the Polaris Heritage Prize in 2019 and Diana Krall reported that listening to the album sparked her ambition of becoming a jazz pianist. Tonight’s leader, Alvin Queen, is a legend in his own right. For many years, he was the drummer in Oscar Peterson’s final group before the latter’s passing in 2007.

Jazz Masterworks Series: In 2014, Niels Lan Doky began using the term “Jazz Masterworks Series” to present live performances and modern interpretations of iconic albums that have defined the genre at the now defunct The Standard Jazz Club in Copenhagen. “Unlike Classical music, jazz is mostly improvised and as a result we don’t have written scores of masterworks that can be read and played by other artists. But I have concluded that album recordings are the jazz world equivalent, hence the Jazz Masterworks Series concept was born.” Stellar casts of American, European and South American musicians from the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective will perform and re-interpret the following selection of masterworks albums from Jazz’s iconic canon at Hotel d'Angleterre during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2020: Oscar Peterson’s “Night Train” // “Ella and Louis” by Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald // Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd’s “Jazz Samba” // “Velvet Mood” by Billie Holiday.
