Niels Lan Doky's acclaimed feature-length music documentary from 2005 has been called "the Buena Vista Social Club of jazz", "a tribute to life", "a love declaration to Copenhagen" and much more. Filmed in the Summer of 2004, "Between a Smile and a Tear" portrays a handful of musicians from different backgrounds and explores their life philosophies as they gather in Copenhagen to temporarily reopen, for the first time in 30 years, the city's old jazz club Montmartre at its original location, to play a final a once-in-a-lifetime concert.
