MICHALA PETRI & NIELS LAN DOKY - THE MUSIC OF JOHN COLTRANE Classical recorder virtuoso Michala Petri has through her many performing years occasionally worked with jazz artists and in improvised concerts. Her duo albums from the 1990s with jazz piano icon Keith Jarrett are of course legendary. Those albums featured recordings of works by baroque composers Bach and Händel - the baroque being a period where music was to a great extend improvised from a figured bass. On the upcoming concerts Michala Petri will perform - together with pianist Niels Lan Doky - music by one of jazz history's most influential artists, tenor saxophonist and composer John Coltrane.
John Coltrane's music is incredibly complex, intelligent and groundbreaking. However, it is also deeply passionate, intuitive and compelling. Composing music is essentially improvisation in slow motion and John Coltrane's innovative tenor saxophone improvisations stand out as compositions in their own right and are widely recognized as some of the greatest masterworks in jazz, and they have been - and continue to be - studied and analyzed endlessly since their creation in the 1950s and 1960s.
It's a little known fact that improvisation was actually an integral part of music in the baroque period, and in addition to performing transcriptions of John Coltrane's tenor saxophone solos from milestone recordings of his such as "Giant Steps", "Blue Train" and "Duke Ellington & John Coltrane" - Michala Petri and Niels Lan Doky will draw lines back to earlier music periods, performing works showing the background for today's improvisations, and also venture into own compositions and fully improvised duo performances and more, during this summit meeting between two genres.
This project marks the first encounter between Michala Petri and Niels Lan Doky, two of Denmark's most prominent cultural figures and both among the most internationally acclaimed musicians within their respective fields, classical and jazz.
