ELLA FITZGERALD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM APRIL 5:
The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald passed away in 1996 but would have been 100 years old had she been alive today. As her next birthday is coming up soon, the month of April marks the end of her official Centennial Celebration year and the beginning of the second century of her timeless legacy.
The Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective in association with Wallengren Music and Theatre Management proudly presents the ELLA FITZGERALD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION at the National Museum of Denmark on Thursday April 5th at 8:30 PM (additional shows on subsequent days may be added pending ticket demand).
The program will feature the Victor Jones Trio and the incredible American vocalist Leandra McNair who will interpret the songs of Ella Fitzgerald. Leandra McNair is based in New York and many Copenhageners have already had the opportunity to experience her at the now defunct The Standard Jazz Club in Havnegade, most recently during the whole month of December 2016 when she performed her memorable renditions of the Nat King Cole songbook, and before that as a featured artist on the club's many Late Night Soul Sessions.
The American drummer Victor Jones is mostly known for his long-standing collaboration with Stan Getz. The trio's bassist Romulo Durate is from Brazil and is well-known by Copenhagen audiences from concerts with Camilla Sledge and Daniel Rolim. And finally we are proud to have the Swedish pianist Calle Brickman round up the trio. Like Leandra McNair he has also been closely associated with The Standard Jazz Club.
Dubbed "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She worked with all the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman. (Or rather, some might say all the jazz greats had the pleasure of working with Ella.) She performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt. Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range. They were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities. In fact, many of them had just one binding factor in common - they all loved her.
