Description:

"Jazz Standards" are for the most part just pop songs from the 1930s and 1940s that jazz artists started to interpret as their own. Icons like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane and numerous others created their own jazz renditions of the most famous pop songs of their time, in order to offer audiences a radically different perspective on extremely familiar songs. And in most cases, their renditions have outlived the original versions by far, being played and re-recorded by thousands of new jazz artists in the decades that followed. As a result, these songs are now widely identified as the classic jazz repertoire.

We are taking this concept into the present and gather a seasoned international all-star jazz trio led by the “knight of Jazz,” Danish piano icon Niels Lan Doky, featuring French bass virtuoso Francois Moutin and, for the first time in Denmark, his identical twin brother, Louis Moutin, who is also a highly acclaimed drummer on the international jazz scene, not least in the USA and his native France. The spectacular young Danish vocalist Amanda Thomsen returns from the USA to complete the lineup - to explore some of today's biggest pop songs in a jazz setting. Come and join us on this adventurous journey and experience history in the making as we develop tomorrow's new jazz standards.

About Niels Lan Doky:

Niels Lan Doky is the knight of Jazz; telling the stories of the music and his journey to becoming a global icon of the genre. A generation younger than artists like Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny, pianist, composer and recording artist Niels Lan Doky is one of the most acclaimed and prolific jazz artists of his time. He has released more than 40 albums and has collaborated with the greatest artists in jazz and has won countless awards and accolades around the world. When he released his debut album in 1986 the American jazz writer Dan Morgenstern wrote: “There is nothing more encouraging and satisfying than to encounter for the first time a young Jazz musician of real stature, someone who can make you feel that the future of the music is in good hands. There can not be the slightest doubt that Doky’s talent is of real significance - that rare thing in the Jazz of our time, an original voice in the great tradition”. Since then, Niels Lan Doky has had one of the most extensive and unusual careers ever seen in music, which - aside from performing, arranging, composing and producing - also has included work as a film director, author, speaker, venue owner and more. He was Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark on April 16th, 2010 and has appeared on bestseller lists in Europe and Asia. He has lived in Boston, New York, Paris and London before returning to his hometown of Copenhagen in 2013. Truly a global cosmopolitan, he has performed for many prominent world figures including Pope Jean Paul II, actor Roger Moore, French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, HRH the Prince Henrik of Denmark, a.o.

“Niels Lan Doky is the best pianist of his generation. I am stunned by the freshness of his music.”
- Sugita Hiroki (Swing Journal, Japan)

“Fresh and provocative approaches”
-John S. Wilson (New York Times)

“This Danish pianist is one of the most prolific musicians of his generation. Nothing stops his excessive and relentless musical research on levels only accessible to the greatest artists in jazz”.
-Plurimedia Spectacles (Paris, France)

“Niels is not gloating about being at the top. He just belongs there.”
-Mike Zwerin (International Herald Tribune)

“A sound all his own. It is difficult not to come away very impressed.”
-Scott Yanow (Jazziz)

“Inventive and ultra lyrical.”
-Gene Kalbacher (Hot House, New York)

Behind the scenes:

This show is presented by the NIELS LAN DOKY INTERNATIONAL JAZZ COLLECTIVE with partners Nørrebro Theater, Nørrebro Bryghus, Qvartz, Mejlshede Låse, Nørrebro Handelsforening and NørrebroLiv. The NLD IJC is an association of prolific musicians from three different continents (Europe, North America and South America) - who are devoted to presenting unique and exclusive jazz performances of the highest order, which they curate and produce themselves and which cannot be heard anywhere else. The collective is led by jazz pianist and producer Niels Lan Doky, who was knighted by HM the Queen of Denmark. The NLD IJC was founded in September 2017 and has produced a total of 60 events at the National Museum of Denmark, located in the capital of Copenhagen. This Summer, the collective is proud and excited to take up residence at Nørrebro Theater, a prominent venue located in the heart of Nørrebro - one of Copenhagen’s most progressive neighborhoods  with its many cafés, restaurants, shops, and theatres. Nearby sights include the gravesite of Danish literary icons Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard and of legendary American jazz expats Ben Webster and Kenny Drew, not to mention that Niels Lan Doky grew up just around the corner from Nørrebro Theater.
